ABSTRACT
This paper examines the marriage pattern across several cultures. In doing so, it analyses problems and prospects of the institution and also provides insights into several marital practices observed across cultures. It also examines forms of marriage, marital expectations and myths. Furthermore, it discusses the patterns of marriage, its changing institution and what makes marriage to work. These include establishing love maps, nurturing fondness and admiration, turning towards each other instead of away, making one鈥檚 partner to influence the other, solving solvable conflicts, overcoming gridlock and creating shared meaning. It concludes by stating that not all marriages are illusional for the same reason, nor is there usually one reason for an unworkable marriage.
